Creative Sabbatical

I'll be honest: updating my blog is not a big priority to me. The reason for this is probably at least one of three things. 1) April is the big Lenten month and everything Lent and Easter took higher priority 2) Other creative endeavors came first and 3) the supply of creative writing juice is a little low. I don't want to write something just for the sake of writing it, but I also want to be cognizant of those who do read my blog.

So, after some thought and prayer I decided the best thing to do is take an official creative sabbatical. A sabbatical is a period of rest. It's longer than a normal sabbath. Sabbaths are important as short-term rests to help us reconnect with God, ourselves, our loved ones, our planet, our hobbies, etc. Sabbath rest matters, but in terms of writing I am needing something a little more long-term. So, I'm not deactivating my blog, but I am taking a short break. The break will allow me to regroup my thoughts and my wonderings into future articles. The break will also give me a public permission to step away from this mode of communication and decide whether it's a valuable way for me to spend my time.

Some questions I want to ask during this sabbatical: What do I want to write about? Who is this blog for? Am I really serving God by giving creative energy to an online blog? The last question is especially important.

Creativity in a life of faith is so important, and I want to spend the summer thinking about how God might be calling me to use my own creativity -- whether that's in renewed ways or new ways. My creative sabbatical will last through the summer of 2022 and I will plan to make a decision on my pathway in the fall. I pray you have a meaningful spring and summer, with lots of space to imagine how God might be calling you to a new or renewed sense of faithful living. What might YOU be needing a sabbatical from? Would it be worthwhile to take some kind of sabbatical to recharge your batteries?

Blessings to you in your own creative journey. Peace be with you!
